A Weird Week calls for a Weird Newsletter
017: Welcome to the Seattle Random Show! The week was just weird. Maybe it’s the cotton wood thats now floating around, making parts of town look like a snow storm. Or maybe its the pending panic of Baby C entering 37 weeks today. I have my last Seattleite You Should Know but I’ve been procrastinating on it for a month now. I’m scared to finish. What will I do afterwards? Probably just ghost all of you 🤣. In keeping this week short, here are 4 headlines that caught my attention this week. One made me say “Wow, that’s crazy.” One took up WAYYYY too much of my time because it made one of my videos from 3 years ago go viral also. One was paid for, and one was a very cool dinner I attended.
May 18, 1980 - This week marked the 44 year anniversary of Mount St. Helens erupting. It killed 57 people and released one the largest debris avalanches ever recorded (according to the US Geological Survey). I think back to the 2020 fire season when our city looked like Mars. But I don’t think those fires compare to this. Eyewitnesses are quoted saying it felt like the end of the world.
Le Coin gets accused of racism - A rant on Tiktok by @seafoodie206 went viral this week, accusing the Fremont-based restaurant of racism during Mother’s Day brunch. After sitting down and ordering a mimosa, her family was told she couldn’t feed her toddler snacks inside the restaurant. Her husband took the child outside, and while she was waiting, observed the host and server talking about her. She then picked up her stuff and left. She didn’t pay for the mimosa and the host came chasing after her outside, causing a scene. The rant has driven a flood of 1 star Google and Yelp reviews to the restaurant from customers who likely don’t live here, nor have eaten at the restaurant. It’s a weird story all around and I have talked with so many who see both sides of it. Was the punishment the restaurant has endured this week worth the crime? I’m not so sure. They have issued an apology on Instagram, and I assume fired the host (I read older reviews that also said this person was not helpful).
I opened my Tiktok app and saw that my video about Le Coin from 2021 (when they were still serving to-go food only) had received a hundred new comments and now had 50K new views. It’s crazy how her rant drove so many people to my profile to complain. As if I was the restaurant owner and had been involved with this situation. I think that put a sour taste in my mouth. Since I was also getting called racist and anti-kid, it created more empathy from me for the restaurant. I’m sure what the team there experienced this week hurt. It hurt me, was a big distraction, and I wasn’t even involved. We will see how big of an impact this has on Le Coin going forward. If you saw the video, and have opinions, hit reply and let me know.
Women’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Returns to Seattle sponsored - “Returns to Seattle” (kind of). 1 of the 5 Women’s Golf Majors of the year will be played at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington. Professional golf rarely comes to the Pacific Northwest, so this is one of few chances to see the best in the world tee it up. Right before they head to the Olympics too. I got to play the course this month during a media preview. Off the first tee, my drive bounced off a tree with a loud thud against the bark. The GM of the course, Leslie Ludlow called it the “Sound of Sahalee.” Every hole is narrow and tree lined. I must have hit a dozen trees on the day.
As you can tell, they have partnered with me to promote the event. On Saturday, I’ll be posting a video on my IG to promote it. If you’re interested, this link to purchase tickets will help keep me in business.
James Beard Foundation collaborates with Kricket Club - I attended a special dinner called JBF Greens on Wednesday night in the Ravenna neighborhood at Kricket Club. The nationally known James Beard Foundation hosted the dinner to highlight local chef Preeti Agarwal. Tickets were $100 and 70% of that went to the business, while the other 30% went to the nonprofit. The five course menu was highlighted by the Chicken Tikka with Activated Charcoal and the Kabargah Milk-Braised Lamb Chop. Wine pairings were included with the ticket as well. I thought this was a great value for a one of a kind dinner.
I hope you have the best weekend ever. For those of us lucky to have Monday off, soak it all in. For those of you that work on Memorial Day, respect. I have been there before and know it’s miserable.
